Far from what became of other girls in the town of Kate in Kampala(Uganda) where Sumayya lives with her nine siblings, joining the Brass for Africa as a student to gain mastery in playing the biggest instrument in the band, the tuba, marked a new definition of transformation in her life and as well giving esteem to young girls playing instruments in Katwe.
Sumayya, through her refined skills in playing the tuba instrument, has been ushered onto prestigious platforms such as performing at Ronnie Scott’s (UK) and a residence at Cheltenham Music Festival (UK). She has performed alongside world-renowned jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
In an article published by Forbes Under 30, Sumayya is listed as one of the young Africans under 30 who are defying the odds and making giant strides in the Creative Arts category.
The article also highlighted other outstanding achievements of the young creative, being featured in the award-winning film TOPOWA! Never Give Up (Winner Best Documentary Raindance Film Festival, Winner BIFF Best Documentary, Winner Melbourne Documentary Film Festival), coupled with performances she displayed in July 2022 throughout Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany with other colleagues from Uganda.
Sumayya does not undermine serving her community and country by passing her acquired skills on to the next generation, as a Music and Life Skills teacher.
